Today, women make up about 50 percent of all physicians, yet less than 25 percent of executive leadership positions in healthcare are held by women. We need to be able to call out the unconscious biases that keep women from ascending. Research by LeanIn.org and McKinsey & Co, which spawned a series about men, women, and work in the Wall Street Journal, captures the real modern challenge: most men don’t believe that inequality is an issue anymore.
Diversity in any industry has a tremendous impact on business results, and healthcare is no different. We should be sponsoring female executives and doing all that we can to translate the diversity we have among providers into diversity among leaders.
